Shopian Police Arrest Three in Gambling Raid Near Sugan Orchards

Shopian Police detained three men caught gambling during a routine patrol near Sugan Orchards under Police Post Turkwangam on April 9. Officers recovered ₹29,000 in stake money and a deck of playing cards from the site. This action forms part of an ongoing campaign to curb social evils and illegal activities in the district.

Identities and Escape of Suspect

The arrested individuals are Bashir Ahmad Ganie, son of Gh Mohammad Ganie from Pulwama; Nisar Ahmad Seh, son of Gh Mohammad Seh from Achan Pulwama; and Hilal Ahmad Ahanger, son of Gh Qadir Ahanger from Malikpora Pulwama. A fourth person, Bilal Ahmad Sheikh from Tresal Pulwama, escaped during the intervention. Such incidents highlight the challenges police face in remote orchard areas, where dense vegetation and low visibility aid quick getaways.

Legal Proceedings Underway

Authorities registered FIR No. 49/2026 at Police Station Zainapora under Section 13 of the Gambling Act, which penalizes public gaming and betting. Investigation continues to uncover potential networks or repeat offenses. In Jammu and Kashmir, gambling persists as an underground activity despite strict prohibitions, often linked to petty crime and financial distress in rural pockets.

Drive Against Social Evils

Shopian Police emphasize their resolve to uphold public order and encourage community reports of illegal conduct. These patrols target not only gambling but also drug peddling and other vices that erode social fabric. Regular enforcement disrupts cycles of addiction and debt, fostering safer environments in apple-rich regions prone to such lures during idle seasons.
